Jacob Pullar – 2^nd year Facilities and Building Services Apprentice at the Port of Grangemouth.

Why did you decide to apply for an apprenticeship role with Forth Ports?

I saw the role online and decided to apply for it. When I found out about the variety of work involved and that I’d also be able to work towards a qualification at the same time, I was even more interested.

What type of work are you involved in?

Some of my main jobs have included dealing with contractors which includes bringing them on to site, inducting them and ensuring they aware of site policies. I’m also responsible for checking all meters and emergency lights across the Port and have just started reviewing internal building lighting for improvements in energy efficiency.

How do you find working whilst also learning?

It’s great – my first and second year is focussed on my Diploma in Facilities Services which is an SVQ so it’s all work-based learning with no need to attend College. It’s made up of work place evidence and performance questions which helps me apply my knowledge to the job and studies. My assessor also comes to the site every few weeks to assess me in the workplace and help me where required. In my third year there will be an opportunity for me to progress to HNC in Facilities Management/Services.

Why do you think being an apprentice at Forth Ports is a good career path?

There is a huge variety of jobs at the port and each day can be completely different. As well as my technical training and support from the Engineering team, I also have a dedicated Learning & Development Specialist who I have regular reviews with to check in on my progress and general wellbeing so I feel really supported. It’s also nice to get together with all Apprentices across Scotland for ‘Apprentice Days’ once per quarter and have that support network too.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of applying?

The best advice I could give is to go for it and give it your best shot, and if you get the job work hard at it as it is an amazing opportunity.

What specific skills do you feel you’ve developed or enhanced during your apprenticeship?

There have been lots but I’d definitely say a big one has been my communication skills which helps me in my day to day job and out of work. I’ve also developed a good work ethic and professional etiquette.
