RDF & Waste

The Port of Tilbury along with our Scottish Ports handle a variety of waste and recycled products each year (including RDF/SRF, Scrap Metal, Woodchip, Glass, recycled aggregates) with the Port of Tilbury being the UK’s largest waste export location receiving, processing and exporting a range of waste products from the UK and overseas, making up 15% of the port’s throughput.

In recent times, growth in exporting waste products has been driven by overseas demand and we now regularly ship to a numbers of European destinations and China. Being located close to major cities makes our ports a highly efficient solution for major waste and recycling companies. Furthermore, both Forth Ports Dundee and Grangemouth and Tilbury hold their own RDF Licences, providing a common user terminal for shippers to use our RDF facilities.

Many of our ports have tenants who recycle within their own sites on the port. These customers can utilise all our facilities including open storage, stevedoring and handling services and rail links. Combined this provides our customers with a more efficient, streamlined supply chain.

Naturally, handling such sensitive cargoes requires that all parties work closely to ensure full regulatory compliance. Forth Ports has built strong relationships with local environmental agencies, liaising with them on a regular basis to help ensure smooth operations for our customers.
